Maybe I should have called this site "a study of water". Water is everywhere here, filling this little Tin Hat valley, cloaking the trees, passing overhead, dusting the hills between here and the Smith Range. Ernest "Smokey" Smith was a Canadian private in World War II who found himself facing down two German tanks and a passel of angry infantrymen. With a wounded comrade lying in the dirt behind him, Smith destroyed both tanks and put the enemy to flight. It was a bold, brash, crazy deed, so we named a mountain range after him.
